Learning Center
The Learning Center offers the lab component of several writing, reading and math courses as well as individualized programs in math and English skills. Instructors offer small-group clinics in basic writing, reading, research and math skills and are available to help students with specific academic questions and concerns. The Learning Center also houses the Mentor program, a drop-in service for students who need help with writing assignments, and tutorial services (see below). Students may use the Learning Center as their schedules permit. For more information, speak to Catherine Hodges at 791-2240, 791-2242, or 791-2236.

Academic Advising
It is important that you see a counselor at least once per term to evaluate your academic progress. Your counselor will be able to answer any questions you have about course requirements, degree requirements or schedules.
Do not worry if you have not decided upon a major as many students entering community colleges are ?undeclared.? Attending a community college allows you to take your time when deciding your major and what is right for you.
It is strongly encouraged that transfer students complete an Educational Study Plan (ESP) early in their enrollment. Many four-year colleges and universities have varying requirements. A counselor can guide you toward appropriate coursework preparation.
For advising appointments, call 791-2329, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or stop by the counseling center in AC-126 to make an appointment.
Learning Disability Program
Many people have learning disabilities that interfere with how they process information. It may cause difficulties with academic work that require reading, writing and performing math calculations, among others. Porterville College provides services and accommodations for students that qualify for these services. To qualify, students must have AVERAGE or ABOVE AVERAGE intelligence, a processing deficit AND an aptitude-achievement discrepancy in at least one academic area.
Porterville College provides assessment for students who think they may have a learning disability. Once qualified, students will complete an Educational Accommodations Plan with the Learning Disabilities Specialist to ensure equal opportunity for success.
Application/Update Required for All Students
A mark-sense or "bubble"-type application for admission or application submitted via the web is required of all new, transfer and some returning students (whose last attendance was prior to 1987). It is estimated that this form will take 10-15 minutes to complete. Continuing and returning students who have attended some time since 1987 will be required to complete an update form only.
