Valley  Writers

The Valley Writers Collection, housed in the Porterville College Library, was dedicated, April 2001.  Its mission is to collect copies of books written by authors who have been born, or lived at some time, in the Great Central Valley of California.  These books are for library reading, circulation, and preservation.

The collection exhibits over 200 authors and 500 different titles.  Well known authors like Joan Didion, Maxine Hong Kingston, William Saroyan, Gary Snyder, Gary Soto, and John Steinbeck share the shelves with Porterville writers published for the first time.

Authors represent the diverse backgrounds of Central Valley residents:  African Americans, Armenians, Filipinos, Hispanics, Italians, Japanese Americans, Native Americans, Scandinavians, and many more.  Subjects in the collection include:  anthropology, art, autobiography, California, children's titles, drama, ecology, fiction, history, literature, nonfiction, poetry, short stories, sciences, and more.

This Web site includes a  bibliography of authors and titles with additional pages for local authors and autographed books.  Visitors to the Valley Writers Collection are invited to send names of other Valley  authors and their titles not yet included in the collection.  Other suggestions comments, and/or corrections will gladly be received by Lorie Barker, Reference Librarian - Porterville College Library (lebarker@pc.cc.ca.us).
